Day 11/12: Amboseli National Park
Leave Nairobi, crossing the industrial area, to reach the arid Athi Plains, near the town of Kajiado. A dry scrub country, dotted with thorny Umbrella Acacias, announces one’s arrival into the African savannah. After crossing the frontier town of Namanga, on the border with Tanzania, the semidesertic landscape leads to the Amboseli National Park. Game drive at 16.00 pm.
Amboseli is an enormous volcanic plateau, dominated by the majestic peaks of the eternally snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro.
Amboseli is justly famous for its big game and scenic beauty. Kilimanjaro is the highest single mountain in the world (5895 m) and the tallest part of Africa. It is ever present in the background on a clear day.
Game viewing is particularly easy in this Park. There is a permanent concentration of animals in the area centred around the dry salt lake at Ol Tukai.
Amboseli is noted for its now dwindling black rhino population. Although the park is almost totally eroded and dry there are several marshes and swamps, whose waters attract an extensive assortement of wildlife: gazelles, impalas, gerenuks, zebras, wildebeest, buffalos and lions, giraffes, among others, finding solace in this harsh country. Cheetah are frequently seen and there are hippos in the swamps.
However, the biggest attraction of the park are the elephants, ambling along in huge herds with the incomparable Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop.
Birds are numerous and a special attraction in the lake and marsh area.
ACCOMODATION: Amboseli lodge
Mealplan: LDB
Day 13: Tsavo West National Park
This morning, we continue north to the Tsavo West National Park.
Forming one of the world's largest game parks is the combined area of Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, together with the adjoining private sanctuary of Taita. A model national park in layout, geophysical, animal and plant diversity, situated midway between Nairobi and Mombasa. This starkly beautiful park suffered considerable deprivation both in physical damage and animal loss in 1970, but this is now well past, and today the park is thriving once more.
To the many natural wonders in this harsh countryside include the fascinating Mzima Springs, a marvellous eruption of underground crystal waters arising in the Chyulu Hills from Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching the surface to form clear pools, a heaven for a rich wildlife pageant. The wildlife in this park includes herds of elephant and prides of lion. Less common species include fringed‑eared oryx, klipspringer, striped hyena and caracal. South of the park is a private sanctuary with lovely lakes and waterholes, which ensures an exciting variety of animals at all times of the year. Weaver birds and their fascinating nests are found throughout the park, as are Fisher’s starling, hornbills and parrots.
ACCOMODATION: Kilaguni Lodge.
Mealplan: LDB
Day 14: Tsavo East National Park - Taita Hills
After breakfast at the hotel, the lodge’s vehicle will transfer us to the Salt Lick Lodge.
Leave for Taita Hills arriving in time for lunch at the Taita Hills Lodge.
This famous tree hotel, with its walkways and thatched rondavels, is situated in front of a pond, which is illuminated by night, enabling us to view the nocturnal wildlife as they come to the salt lick, and to drink water.
ACCOMODATION: The Salt Lick Lodge or any other hotel of your choice.
Mealplan: DB
Please note: Only one small piece of luggage per person is allowed at Salt Lick Lodge. The rest of the luggage will remain at the consign at the Taita Hills hotel. Please ensure you have prepared your overnight bag beforehand.
Day 15/16: Taita Hills - Mombasa
After breakfast depart for Mombasa, the second most important city of the country. We will cross the Likoni ferry to the SouthCoast. Arriving in Mombasa at Lunch time. Rest of day free.
Mombasa is the largest and most popular island on the Kenya coast. This old but vibrant gateway to Kenya is a mystical mixture of ancient and modern, with a cosmopolitan population blending Africa, Arabia and Asia. But not everyone realises that this picturesque port is an island with two deep water harbours. Evocative of the east, graceful sailing dhows unchanged throughout the centuries, arrive on the monsoon winds, while ocean liners berth just around the headland. Fringing the dhow harbour is the OldTown, dominated by the ancient Portuguese Fort Jesus, a maze of narrows streets overshadowed by high ornamental balconies of quaint shuttered houses and vibrant open bazaars.
