Full Itinerary
Day 1/2: Amboseli National Park
Jambo! Welcome to Africa! In the morning at 08.30 hrs pick up from your hotel in Nairobi or at Jomokenyatta International Airport.
Leave Nairobi, crossing the industrial area, to reach the arid Athi Plains, near the town of Kajiado. A dry scrub country, dotted with thorny Umbrella Acacias, announces one’s arrival into the African savannah. After crossing the frontier town of Namanga, on the border with Tanzania, the semidesertic landscape leads to the Amboseli National Park. Game drive at 16.00 pm.
Amboseli is an enormous volcanic plateau, dominated by the majestic peaks of the eternally snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro.
Amboseli is justly famous for its big game and scenic beauty. Kilimanjaro is the highest single mountain in the world (5895 m) and the tallest part of Africa. It is ever present in the background on a clear day.
Game viewing is particularly easy in this Park. There is a permanent concentration of animals in the area centred around the dry salt lake at Ol Tukai.
Amboseli is noted for its now dwindling black rhino population. Although the park is almost totally eroded and dry there are several marshes and swamps, whose waters attract an extensive assortement of wildlife: gazelles, impalas, gerenuks, zebras, wildebeest, buffalos and lions, giraffes, among others, finding solace in this harsh country. Cheetah are frequently seen and there are hippos in the swamps.
However, the biggest attraction of the park are the elephants, ambling along in huge herds with the incomparable Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop.
Birds are numerous and a special attraction in the lake and marsh area.
